Why Watch Birds?

Most of us start to watch birds because it is interesting, enjoyable and it enriches our lives. For those of us who spend most of our days working indoors the opportunity for a good walk in the country has always been something to look forward to. Add to that something beautiful and fascinating to watch--like bird behaviour; couple it with the challenge of recognition--size, shape, colour and habitat; stir in our instinct to keep lists and the desire to collect the rare and you have an addictive recipe!

Something for Everyone

What is so good about bird watching is that it can be done by all ages and ability of people. It brings great pleasure to the elderly and disabled as well as the young and fit. Everyone can find their own level of enjoyment. Those suffering from stress or recovering from a mental illness have often found peace and tranquillity in the pursuit. It is not a competitive sport, requires no special skills to enjoy it and is easily accessible wherever you live in Britain.

Where to Watch

We are fortunate to have a wide variety of resident and migrant birds that can be observed in a wide range of habitats in Britain. Most people start by watching birds in their garden, local park or open space--all within walking distance. Many have their favourite local 'patch' that they use regularly and become familiar with the species throughout the year.

Friendly and Helpful

Although it can be a solitary pursuit, birding is more enjoyable when shared with others. As a 'newbie' don't be afraid to ask advice from fellow birders. They are generally a friendly bunch happy to pass on identification tips or views on books, places to watch or equipment. There are many clubs that you can join if you want to--or just enjoy their good company when out and about. Its up to you.
